Antonino (Tony) Caruso, (18 December 1935 – 7 August 2011) was an Italian-Australian hairdresser and businessman. He is credited with transitioning Adelaide's 1960's Barbering scene into a more Stylist profession. He was the first businessman to start a Men's salon and incorporate the Wash, Style cut and the Blowdry. Arriving in Adelaide in 1960 he established himself in Adelaide as the Premier Barber/Stylist at Scott's a BarberShop at 17 Rundle Street (now Rundle Mall)gaining statewide honours at Hair Competitions. His Passion was the client and this is where he felt most comfortable, concentrating on "making lifelong friendships" as would proudly announce. In 1967, he opened the first Mens Hair Salon called "Tony Caruso Men's Hairstylist" in Francis Street, just off Rundle Mall. During this period he became an important member of the Master Hairdressing Association of South Australia. His dedication to his no-nonsense training left him with the respect of his peers. His popular tagline to his apprentices and staff was "The secret to a perfect haircut is many small things done well"


Early life

Antonino Caruso was born in Capo d'Orlando (Prov. Messina) Sicily, Italy. To Giuseppina Saturno a dressmaker and Salvetore Caruso, a Cordwainer/Showmaker. In 1941 due to poverty the family of 10 moved to Messina, Sicily for better opportunities.
