Michałki (depending of the manufacturer are also described as Michaszki) are chocolate bar candies[1] manufactured by various confectioneries in Poland. Chocolate candies are in rectangular shape and are filled with cocoa and nut filling with the extra addition of crispy peanuts. Candies are entirely covered with chocolate. [2][3]

Before 1989, Michałki candies were produced in various confectioneries all over the country, like for example since 1965, were produced in Hanka confectionery factories in Siemanowice Śląskie[4] and since 1967 in Śnieżka confectionery factories. In 1968 the second factory was producing over 400 tons of candies annualy.

Candies name derives from the diminutive form of the male name Michał[5]. Its etymology is not clearly explained, according to a one story candies were designated to be named after Michał - the son of the former CEO of Hanka Confectioneries[6]. Another version of a story told by Śnieżka, relates it to a young man called Michał who supposedly fell in love with Janina Sajkiewicz-Miodek, a later aunt of professor Jan Miodek and the main technologist of confectioneries.[7] Anyways, the candies brand has become customary in the common parlance and it determines the whole sort of sugar confectionery, hence the name of brand is very often written with a small letter.

In March 2005, through a conflict between Michałek company and other manufacturers concerning the right to use the brand, the police secured documentation and tons of candies in a dozen of confectioneries around Poland incl. the Solidarność Confectionery in Lublin (Złote Michałki)[8], the Odra Confectionery in Brzeg Dolny (Michałki Piastowskie) and theWawel Confectionery in Kraków (Michałki Zamkowe). At that time similar candies were manufactured in Cloett factory in Gdańsk belonging to Fazer concern and in Tutti company in Kraków. Manufacturing was resumed after a few days.[9]

In 2012 price per kilo of Michaszki candies at the market in Kaliningrad amounted to 20 zlotys.[10]
