User:SarekOfVulcan/Admin coaching
Hi there! I'm SarekOfVulcan (talk · contribs), occasionally known as Garrett Fitzgerald. I've been an editor for over three years, and have worked on a wide variety of articles. WP:TWINKLE serves most of my needs, but I frequently wish I could look at deleted content to see if I agreed that the deletion was justified. Fang Aili has graciously consented to be my coach, and I'm looking forward to working with her.--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 20:03, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
How about we start with the standard question: what do you want to do with admin tools? --Fang Aili talk 18:12, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Blocking blatant vandals instead of going through AIV would be nice :-) And I know that a content dispute isn't vandalism. Besides that, I'd like to have access to deleted revisions. I've occasionally had questions about the contents of pages or images that have been speedied, and it would be nice to be able to answer the questions myself instead of bothering the deleting admin, who might not log back on for a while.
- Looking through WP:ADMIN, I see Special:Unwatchedpages. Since I like keeping WP as clean as possible, this is probably something I would also do regularly.--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 18:56, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
What are your personal standards for adminship? What makes a person ready for adminship? --Fang Aili talk 19:46, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- An admin has to have a good familiarity with WP policies. They have to be willing to protect the integrity of Wikipedia, but also be steady-headed enough to not act when necessary.--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 20:48, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Cool. Got any questions for me? :) --Fang Aili talk 21:36, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yes. "What questions should I ask you?" :-)--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 22:10, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- But seriously, how do you define your job as admin? I know each of you has a slightly different focus...--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 02:17, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- Cool. Got any questions for me? :) --Fang Aili talk 21:36, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm. Well, when I vote in an RfA, my very general requirements are dedicated and civil. The user should also have a firm understanding of policy and have adequate experience.
- For myself, being an administrator means I should set a good example. I should be civil at all times and be available to answer questions. People look up to admins (rightly or wrongly), and this means I need to take greater responsibility for my actions. --Fang Aili talk 18:10, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
I just tried my hand at a non-admin close on something that looked like a speedy keep -- it was previously speedy kept and overturned, but there was enough new sourcing added that it looked like a case of WP:SNOW.--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 18:59, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Howdy, Sarek. This edit was a bit strenuous; some would call it uncivil. Try to be calmer next time. --Fang Aili talk 23:40, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, but I was "provoked" (and yes, those are scare quotes, not mistaken emphasis). After seeing several dozen (or more) Trek articles nominated for deletion/merging at one time, seeing the namesake of one of the most popular movies movie AfDed for not asserting notability got under my skin. If he had just taken it slower and given people more of a chance to respond...--uɐɔlnʌɟoʞǝɹɐs 01:29, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's true -- but the trick is to not let yourself be provoked. Don't feed the trolls! :) --Fang Aili talk 15:51, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
