Nebraska Christian Schools[1], also known as NCS, is located in Central City, Nebraska.
History
[edit]Nebraska Christian Schools first opened its doors in September 1959 under the leadership of Walter O. Ediger, Administrator. It began as a boarding school for 9th through 12th grade students, largely from the Sandhills of Nebraska. The first year, 6 faculty members taught 38 students and oversaw boys and girls dormitories.
In 1971 a junior high (7th and 8th grade) program was added, and in 1977 grades Kindergarten through 6 were added as well.
The mission of the school is "to assist the family and church by providing a Christ-centered education, equipping students with a Biblical worldview and encouraging a love relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ."[2]
Academics
[edit]Nebraska Christian Schools' academic offerings include the basics such as biology, history, geography, algebra, English and others and additional classes such as Bible, English as a second language, business and industrial arts.
All academic subjects at NCS are covered in its http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-day_week.
A unifying theme among the classes is providing the student with a Biblical worldview in any subject matter covered.
International Program
[edit]Nebraska Christian Schools' dormitories house not only American students but also international students, primarily from Asia. Students attending NCS as a part of the international program attend ESL and mainstream classes, stay for weekends with local families on home stays, and travel around the United States on special trips to places such as Washington, DC; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Chicago, Illinois.
Special Events
[edit]Each December, Nebraska Christian Schools hosts a [Festival of Lessons and Carols|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_lessons_and_carols] directed by Maestro Eric Dale Knapp. Maestro Knapp is world renown having conducted in Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and for the 2012 London Olympics among many other accomplishments.[3]
Each year's Festival is a unique program built by Maestro Knapp in conjunction with the musical teachers on staff at Nebraska Christian. NCS 1st through 12th grade students have the opportunity to participate in either the 50-voice children's choir (grades 1 through 6) or the 200 voice adult choir (grades 9 thru 12 and area musicians). Some students have also played instruments as part of the prelude or participated in the orchestra that accompanies the choir. Qualified students from other area high schools are also invited to attend.[4]
Other notable participants have included Kala Balch, a staple session singer for the hit show [Glee:_The_Music,_Volume_3_Showstoppers|GLEE]; Megan M. Knapp, soprano vocalist; Linda Sweetman-Waters pianist and organist; and Mark Thalander, organist and composer best known for his tenure at the Crystal Cathedral in California.[5]
