The existence of "Mori girl"[edit]

Mori in Japanese means "forest", and obiviously, mori girls refers girls who seems like living in the forest. People might have seen Mori girls dressed in earthy colors that attest to an artistic sensibility at one with nature. She’s part of Little Red Ridinghood[1], although she prefers dark blue, dark green or bordeaux brown to bright red , part of Marie Antoinette pastoral fantasy, part of Alice in Wonderland[2]. Although Mori Girl sounds like the sort of name that fashion magazines mint, but the term "mori girl" is actually created two years ago in a Mixi community. "You look like a girl in the forest!" someone said to Choco---the group's founder. And so one day, she began the group, and by June 2009 it already had 8000 members. As "mori girl" becomes popular, it creates a new kind of fashion style, many websites has sources to teach girls how to dress up and make up to look like a mori girl, and even games are made.



How to be like a mori girl[edit]

Even though mori girl is about the nature, but if one really want to be a mori girl, there are some things we need to be careful about:

1, Lifestyle. Mori girls enjoys to drink teas with their friends and sometimes exchange their personal handmakes and clothes. They don't like to be "in-style" but dressing and living in the way that makes them feel comfortable. They love to travel, no matter by plane, bicycle, or just walking. They have an eye for European culture like in Ireland, France, and Germany. Mori Girls are also interested in taking pictures. Although mori girls are usually a little bit shy, they are sweet young ladies with proper manners and a lovely style.

2, Read the Mori Girl Checklist. Are you a Mori Girl? The original Mori Girl community on Mixi created a checklist of 60 rules to find out if you are a true mori girl.( to see the list in detail, check out the next section)

3, Hair. Mori Girl like all kinds of hairstyle, but make sure to keep them in natural. Flowers and berries are popular hair accessories.

4, Make up. Keep it natural as possible. It is better to wear no make up at all. Keep the skin clean.

5, Rosy cheeks. Mori girls love nice round rosy cheeks - use a red or pink blush for this look.

6, Pick the right colors. Earth tone colors such as antique white, white, beige, brown, and ivory are very popular with Mori Girls. Mostly use colors that could be find in a forest - keep the colours natural and calm.

7, Pick the right shape. Clothing of the Mori Girl is not body conscious, they don't like to wear clothes that are fitted ot hugs the body, they prefer L-XL rather that S-M.

8, Layer. Most mori girl outfit have an element of layering to them. Make sure not to complicate it, just keep it simple. Start of by layering a dress with a skirt or layering two shirts. Layering does not mean you have to have many items of you. Remember that each layer should be partially visible and is adding to your outfit.

9, Be creative. No one has actually see a real girl living in forest, so everyone's imagination of moti girls can be different, but every style are correct.

10, Listen to alternative music. Alternative, or what is called "Shoe Gaze"[3] is a music movement in London, very popular in Japan, also. Anything with an earthy, Celtic, folk, instrumental or world music is also popular among Mori Girls.

11, Read magazines. Spoon is the most popular magazine among mori girls. SPOON is a Japanese photo book/magazine showing the latest trends in Mori Girl fashion. There are other important magazines offerd for mori girls, Fudge and Mori Girl Papier.

12, Enjoy life itself. It can be beautiful all the time, mori girls always enjoys what they have in hands, take the love and care. That is what Mori girl is all about! Just enjoy life to the fullest.

Tip one: Do some research, go and look at Mori photos, articles and videos.

Tip two: Make some own accessories, Mori girl likes handmakes.

Tip three: Avoid modern trends.

Tip four: Go find a nice cafe, read nice books.

Tip five: Use natural materials such as cotton, wool yarn, and other natural materials.

Tip six: Add some lace and flowers to decorate straw bags or purses.

Tip seven: Go to some Vintage and Thrift Shops to find clothes, there are many suitable clothes for mori girl.

accroding to the Mixi Group checklist, here is some items that represents Mori girls:

1, likes loose dresses and skirts.

2, seldom wears trousers.

3, prefers twisted things to simple ones.

4, likes natural-kei (a related style) but is actually more contrived.

5, cares about the quality of materials.

6, likes ethnic styles.

7, wears A-line skirts and dresses.

8, likes the style of little children.

9, has a taste for dresses or blouses which look like smocks.

10, doesn't like clothes which are sweet from head to toe.

11, favors dark blue, dark green and bordeaux brown.

12, looks good in warm colors.

13, prefers short nails.

14, likes fur, knitwear, fluffy hats and ear-muffs, ponchos and boleros.

15, wants to carry a leather bag.

16, tends to use a pochette (a sort of pocket on a strap).

17, prefers small gold things to silver things.

18, likes old things.

19, likes the expensive antique watches that old people have.

20, likes a large-motif necklace, sports animal motifs and candy motifs, checks and dots, floral retro, lace, leggings or tights, basic round-toed flat shoes.
