Chehalis Historic Preservation Commission

[edit]

Additional history[1]

Specifics[2]

The commission was established in the 1980s.

Outside of historic districts:

  • Charles and Ollie Hays house, 2006. A single-story bungalow on Main Street, the home was built in 1915. The dwelling was restored in 2003 by the Mason family of the Hotel Washington renovations, using paint colors specifically available in the 1910s.[3]
  • Forget-Me-Nots Products building, 2006. On State Avenue, it later was home to the L & E Bottling Company. Originally constructed as an ice cream plant, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1939 and restored between 2005 and 2006.[3]
  • Judge Seymour White House, 2000
  • Gingrich house, 2006. The Victorian home on Market Street across from the Brown Mortuary was built in 1900 for banker Christian Gingrich.[3]
  • Brown Mortuary, 2000[4]

Churches

[edit]

St. Joseph's Catholic Church dedicated in 1960.[5]

Economy

[edit]

Bartel's Clothing and Shoes, founded in 1922 as a family business, originally sold suits and formalwear for men, including tuxedos to graduating students, for several decades before incorporating shoes and women's clothing. It remained in the downtown district and locally owned without interruption since its beginnings. The store was permanently closed in 2023 due to shifting shopping habits and inventory difficulties.[6][7]

Sears fire, October 1945.[8]
