Cyerce cristallina

Cyerce cristallina is a species of sacoglossan sea slug, a shell-less marine gastropod mollusk in the family Hermaeidae.

Distribution[edit]

The Cyerce cristallina can be found throughout the Mediterranean Sea [2]

Chemical defenses[edit]

Unlike other Mediterranean Sacoglossans which sequester compounds used to create toxins from the algae they eat, [2] the Cyerce cristallina produces its own toxins 'de novo': within its own body. [2]. These toxins, Cyerecene-A, are excreted from dorsal appendages (cerata) when disturbed. [3]. The cristallina is also capable of detaching these cerata, which continue to secrete the toxins.[3] These toxins are ichthyotoxins, meaning toxic to fish.[3]
