Vulva Diversity in Pornography

[edit]

Pornography does not often depict diverse vulva appearance, which can cause women to think negatively about their genital appearance.

Mainstream Pornography vs. Made-for-Women Pornography

[edit]

Pornhub.com has does not follow the same rules as ethical pornography[1], and instead provides high volumes of similar content. Pornhub vulva depictions are unvaried, with labial protrusion and amount of pubic hair being minuscule to non-existent[2]. Bellesa.co explicitly states that they "believe that the internet should depict women as we truly are"[3], but it seems that they may be selecting for a specific genital appearance[2]. Bellesa's vulva depictions are not much more diverse than Pornhub[2]. There was no difference between Bellesa and Pornhub for labial protrusion and very little difference for amount of pubic hair depicted[2].

Importance of Diversity

[edit]

Lack of diversity in genital appearance may be contributing to the increase in request for labiaplasty. Thankfully there are people trying to change genital appearance exposure for women. Websites like gynodiversity.com[4] allows women to view a wide range of vulva appearance, and even submit pictures of their own.
