Warnes was born in 1905 and grew up during the early twentieth century in Argentina. He was an autodidact, and despite a lack of formal education, taught himself how to read and write. He held his first job as a carpenter, until he experienced a minor accident; this prompted him to consider another profession. Conrado Nalé Roxlo gave Warnes his first opportunity in the field of journalism, allowing him to become a contributor of the Diario Crítica, a prominent Argentine newspaper. After several years of intensive writing, Warnes's literary style became widely recognized, and his humor gained popularity among Argentine readers. By the early 1930s, he was a key contributor to such popular publications as Mundo Argentino, Aquí está, El Mundo, Patoruzú, Cascabel, Rico Tipo, Satiricón, Leoplán, Vea y Lea, and Clarín. By the turn of the 1940s, Warnes began editing the popular magazine, Cascabel, in which he first published the character, César Bruto, which brought him to fame.
