Subtropical Storm Raoni was a rare and strong subtropical cyclone that formed in the South Atlantic Ocean during late June of 2021, and persisted into July. The origins of the storm could be traced back to an extratropical cyclone that formed about 520 km (320 mi) east-southeast of Montevideo, Uruguay on 26 June.[1] The cyclone developed a warm seclusion and separated from its associated front the day after. The storm was later classified as a subtropical cyclone on 29 June.[1][2]On 28 June, the Satellite Products and Services Division of the NESDIS declared the system to have become a tropical storm.[3] assigning a invest tag to it.[1] It was later named Raoni by the Brazilian Navy when it entered their area of responsibility, and developed an eye shortly after as it continued to intensify.[4] The system began to weaken on 30 June under influence of the subtropical jet. The remnants of the storm fully disintegrated on 1 July.[1][5]

The predecessor extratropical cyclone of Raoni caused heavy rains and strong wind gusts of 104 km/h (65 mph), destroying trees and causing heavy damage to different establishments across Punta del Este.[6] The area's waters were also rough due to the storm. Downpours with continuous gales were also experienced in Uruguay's capital Montevideo.[6] From 24 June to 2 July, Raoni blew cold air from the south into portions of South America, leading to an unusually strong cold wave across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil, with the temperature dropping as much as 15 °C (27 °F) below average in various places. Raoni also influenced a system that produced snow across regions as far north as southern Brazil.[7]
