Marine spatial planning in Indonesia

[edit]
Savu Sea surrounding Savu Island in Indonesia.

In the Savu Sea, surrounding Savu Island, there were conflicts arising due to anthropogenic impacts caused by overfishing, illegal marine life harvests, and improper waste disposal. Due to the unique marine ecosystem at the Savu Sea, a number of environmental conservationists responded to the environmental degradation. The Nature Conservancy and the Institut Teknologi Bandung began to implore the Indonesian government to make an effort in partaking marine spatial planning.

The MSP effort began with first establishing a national park called Savu Sea Marine National Park. First, both the Nature Conservancy and the Institut Teknologi Bandung identified both anthropogenic and natural environmental threats to assess where the zoning should be established. After integrating ecological surveys by scientists, the final plan was developed where several zones were established regulating tourism, fisheries, an education and research zone, etc. [1]
