Historic Claflin. Columbus GA
The first public school for African Americans in Columbus, Claflin School was built by the Freedmen's Bureau, a federal agency, and opened at 1532 Fifth Avenue in 1868. This postcard shows an eight-classroom building that was built on the site in 1921 to complement the original wooden school. The building still stands, attached to the two-story brick building that was built in 1948 and is now considered to be the front of the vacant property. The original wooden building burned in 1958, but students attended school in the two 20th-century buildings until 1973, at which point it was used as administrative offices until 2005.
