Christian Stadlhofer (* 26. Juli 1980 in Stanz im Mürztal) is an Austrian director und performer.

Life[edit]

Christian Stadlhofer was born and raised in Styria, Austria. From an early age on he demonstrated a decided interest in the performing arts participating in numerous school and high school musical productions. He started his studies in Vienna and completed them in Germany at the Musical Department of the renowned Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen.[1] The roles he performed during his college years included Frank Shepard in Stephen Sondheim’sMerrily We Roll Along“, Kurt in von Mayenburg’s „Feuergesicht“ and Orestes in Hoffmannsthal's  „Electra“.

His professional career as a performer has brought him to stages in all German-speaking countries and regions of Europe: Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg and South Tirol. His early engagements ranged from Bellini’s I Puritani in the Aalto Theater in Essen, to productions in the Münchner Volkstheater, the Bochumer Schauspielhaus, the St. Gallen Theater in Switzerland and the Stadttheater Klagenfurt in Austria. His repertory covered roles like Nick in „Fame“ in the Musiktheater im Revier, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh in Josef E. Köpplinger’s prodution of Cole Porter’s „Anything Goes[2] in the Graz Opera and  Percy in Frank Wildhorn’s „Scarlet Pimpernell“ in the Schlossfestspielen Ettlingen.

Parallel to his performing carreer, he kept close ties to his Austiran high school Alma Mater, BORG Kindberg, directing and choreographing highly acknowledged productions of „Jesus Christ Superstar“, „We Will Rock You“, „Grease“, „Cabaret“ and „Crazy For You“.

From 2008 to 2011 he played the fearless vampire killer Professor Abronsius in Roman Polanski’s „Dance Of The Vampires“ in Oberhausen and Stuttgart. His interpretation was enthusiastically acclaimed by critics and audiences in both cities.[3]

Christian has also directed his own one-man shows. „Don’t Fence Me In“ is a biographical journey through Cole Porter’s life and compositions. „Ich Weine Nicht Mehr“ is a satire on the everlasting endeavour of auditions and disappointments.

2013 brought a crucial change to Christian’s professional proclivities, focusing more on direction and choreography.[4] Since then he has directed for the Murx Theater Eppan Jason Robert Brown’s „The Last Five Years“, Dan Goggin’s „Nunsense“, and Georg Kreisler’s „Heute Abend: Lola Blau“, all of them being Southtirolean premieres. In the Consol Theater of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, he staged the world premiere of  Mario Stork’s Verdi musical „Ein Lied von Freiheit“.

As an assitant director to Gil Mehmert, Melissa King and Katharina Wagner, he has been an essential asset to a very diverse array of musicals and opera productions: „ Sunset Blvd.“, „Singin’ In The Rain“, „Tristan und Isolde[5], „Hair“,  „Goethe! Auf Liebe und Tod“, „Lohengrin“, „Hairspray“ and „Fidelio“. These projects brought him to the stages of the Staatstheater Nürnberg, Munich’s Gärtnerplatztheater, The Bayreuth Festival[6], The Prague National Theater, The Dortmund Opera and The New National Theater Tokyo.

In 2015 Christian co-directed a tour production of Cole Porter’s „Kiss Me Kate“ with the German musical theater star Hardy Rudolz. Again in co-direction with Rudolz and choreographer Vanni Viscusi, he created one of the first license-free stagings of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s „Cats[7] at the Luisenburg Festival. This production ran two summer seasons, selling 72,000 tickets, thus breaking the box office record in the 127 years of the oldest German open air festival.

Christian Stadlhofer is also very involved supporting young musical performer talents together with the Group Uptempo e.V. in Düsseldorf[8]. His show „Musical Academy“[9] in August 2017 and 2018 at the Capitol Theater in Düsseldorf was a huge success with both press and audience.

His new production of the musical „Grease“ started its 2017/18 European tour at the Mehr! Theater in Hamburg on October 2017.

Since 2018 Christian Stadlhofer was resident director for Bat Out of Hell and Dance of the Vampires at Stage Metronom Theater in Oberhausen.
