The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that is used to induce ketosis. The diet makes the body burn fats rather than carbohydrates. I.e., if there is little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The main ketone bodies used for energy are acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate,[1] and the levels of ketone bodies are regulated mainly by insulin and glucagon.[2] Most cells in the body can use both glucose and ketone bodies for fuel, and during ketosis, free fatty acids and glucose synthesis (gluconeogenesis) fuel the remainder
