6 Degrees is a social networking Web site launched on 21 Nov 08 offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, blogs, clubs, music, personal profiles, photos, polls, and videos. The free-access Web site's owned and operated by Proffessional Megacorporations Corporative. Their headquarters are located in Welland, Ontario, Canada.

History[edit]

James and Debbie Stewart founded 6 Degrees. Web site membership was initially limited to fans of The OverFiend (a local metal band) at it's initial launch, but was expanded to anybody 13 years of age or older. However, only members who are at least 16 years of age will appear in member searches.

A complete infrastructure of technical expertise, bandwidth, and server capacity was available for the Web site right out of the gate. So the 6 Degrees team wasn't distracted with the typical start-up issues. The project was overseen by James Stewart (Proffessional Megacorporations Corporative's founder, CoB, CEO). The Web site currently has more than 100,000 users worldwide.[1]

The origin of the six-degrees.ca domain was based on the Six degrees of separation concept. Being a Canadian company, it was decided that a .CA domain would be registered. Shortly after launching the Web site, it was suggested that they start charging a fee for the service. James Stewart vetoed the thought, believing that keeping 6 Degrees free was required to ensure it's success. However, it was decided to offer an option for members to remove ads from the Web site for only $1(USD) per month.

Revenue Model[edit]

6 Degrees operates primarily on revenues generated by advertising as it's user model essentially possesses no paid-for features for the end-user. The exception being, the monthly fee to remove ads from the Web site.

Web Site[edit]

6 Degrees users may choose to create/join one or more clubs. Users can connect with friends, gaining them access to their friends' profiles.

The Web site's free to users, but generates revenue from advertising. Users can create profiles including photos and other media (i.e. audio and/or video), exchange public or private messages, and join clubs. The viewing of individual sub-profiles can be restricted to users of varying degrees (from 1st to 4th). Without altering the privacy setting of each sub-profile on 6 Degrees, a sub-profile is visible to everybody by default.
