I am an amateur Wikipedian from Bangkok. Although I am currently a graduate Computer Science student in London, my interests are surprisingly drawn to languages, religions, arts and architectures. Having studyied in India for 4 years did not excite me at all, but the trips throughout this country during my vacations turned to be real satisfaction.

ETYMOLOGY[edit]

My name is Purin Wangkiratikant (Thai: ภูรินทร์ หวังกีรติกานต์, pronounced /pʰūːrīn wǎŋkīːrátìkāːn/), which is derived from both Sanskrit, just like most Thai names, and Chinese.

The words kirati (กีรติ) and kant (กานต์) in my last name are cognate to Sanskrit kīrti (कीर्ति - honour) and kānta (कान्त - beloved) respectively, whereas my first name purin (ภูรินทร์) is a bit more complex. The original word is bhūrindra (भूरिन्द्र), the combination of bhūri (भूरि - land) and indra (इन्द्र - the Hindu king of gods), hence resulting in the meaning "lord on Earth". Wang in the surname, unlike any other words, comes from Mandarin wáng (王 - monarch) which represents the family's Chinese descent.

My informal name, which is quite compulsory for every Thai to be easily called by family members and friends, is Sua (ซัว), the Teochew pronunciation of Chinese shān (山 - mountain). This nickname provides consistency in meaning with the official name Purin.
