Sandhya Mendonca is an author, and the Managing Director and Editor-In-Chief of Raintree Media Private Limited and Global Village Publications India Private Limited.[1] She was a full-time journalist with leading publications for 16 years. In 2004, together with her husband and prominent journalist Allen Mendonca, she became a media entrepreneur and co-founded Raintree Media Private Limited. In 2008, they founded Global Village Publications India Private Limited.

Early Career[edit]

Mendonca began her prolific career as a journalist with Deccan Herald, before moving on to Sunday from the ABP Group and Mid Day. She has been a columnist for The Times of India and written for Hindustan Times, The Independent, The Pioneer and several magazines. During a stint in TV, she reported for the Business Breakfast Show on Doordarshan, among others.

She was a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, and briefly a media consultant for ITC Hotels.

Present Venture[edit]

In 2004, Mendonca co-founded Raintree Media Private Limited, a boutique publishing company specialising in the conceptualisation and creation of coffee table books.

She soon forged an exciting partnership with Global Village Publications to form Global Village Publications India Private Limited in 2008, which publishes the ‘Best Of’ series of business atlases in India and Sri Lanka, which showcase the economic and cultural dynamism of the regions.

Author[edit]

Mendonca has co-authored Reva EV - India’s Green Gift to the World (with Dr. SK Maini), published by Random House in 2013,[2] and Marvels of Mysore & More (with Anita Rao Kashi), published by Raintree Media in 2012.[3] Her stories have been published in the Chicken Soup for the Indian Couples Soul and Chicken Soup for the Indian Single's Soul, both a part of the international Chicken Soup for the Soul series, published in India by Tata Westland in 2012.

Arts[edit]

Mendonca established Under the Raintree in 2010, a not-for-profit forum to encourage dialogue in the Arts, and conducts informal events to promote them.

Under the Raintree has facilitated:

  • The dramatised reading of Anita Nair’s play Nine faces of Being when it was a work-in-progress, directed by Arundhati Raja of ART
  • A variety entertainment programme by Madras Players featuring Mithran Devanesan, PC Ramakrishna, Vishalam Ekambaram and Sharanya Nair
  • Discussions on ‘Art & the City’ with Kiran Mazumdar Shaw and UA Vasanth Rao
  • A panel discussion on ‘Artistic Connections’ with Ravi Kumar Kashi, Vikram Sampath, Arundathi Nag and Madhu Nataraj, co-inciding with the launch of Vriksha – The Life and Times of SG Vasudev
  • A mehfil of Hindustani classical music featuring young tabla maestro Trilochan Kampli and the gifted vocalist Kumar Mardur, and another concert featuring the young star from Kolkata, Arshad Ali.

Mendonca is an amateur actor and has acted in two original plays: Shadows on the Wall[4] , a play on child sexual abuse by Vijay Nair, and Sliced Balls, a golf comedy by Poile Sengupta, besides other productions.

She has also penned the lyrics of the ballad ‘In this Moment’, composed by Sriram Aravamudan.

Personal Life[edit]

Mendonca lives in Bangalore with her son, Aditya.
