General Info[edit]

HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is the latest series of DL server computers that are developed by Hewlett-Packard. The DL380 line represents 2U form-factor rack-mount servers for general purposes, launched on September 8, 2014. HP claims its target was to improve reliability, serviceability, and performance overall in the Gen9 series. ProLiant DL380 Gen9 servers come with the latest Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 processors and the new HP DDR4 SmartMemory supporting 1.5 TB (max.) The server is compliant with various manufacturing standards, including support for ACPI 2.0b, PCIe 3.0, PXE, WOL, USB 3.0/2.0, ENERGY STAR, and ASHRAE A3 and A4 standards.

Ameliorations and New Features[edit]

Intel Xeon E5-2600 Processor[edit]

Serious improvements of computing capabilities were achieved with the new Intel Xeon E5 v3 series. Therefore, new ProLiant DL380 servers can include up to two processors and from four to 18 cores per each processor (36 cores max.), while Gen8 was able to take on board one or two processors with up to 12 cores. New Intel processors operate at a frequency starting from 1.6GHz and up to 3.2GHz (3.7GHz max. in the Turbo Boost mode), while cache may include either 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, or 45MB depending on a model. According to Intel internal testing, these new processors provide a 70% performance boost in some tasks in comparison to the previous Xeon E5 generation.

HP DDR4 Smart Memory[edit]

HP has also developed faster low-voltage load-reduced DDR4 memory with frequencies up to 2,133MHz; as a result, it is now possible to include 768GB of RAM with the highest frequency possible. Server allocates 12 DIMM slots and four channels per one processor. All in all, there are 24 DIMM slots with support up to 32GB of RAM. Additionally, HP priveds optional DDR4 RDIMM memory with maximum capacity up to 384GB (24 x 16GB) with the highest frequency. The latest HP DDR4 Smart Memory is more efficient as it requires only 1.2V in comparison to DDR3-1866 that runs on 1.5V. Hence, it also lowers overall consumption and operating costs.

Chassis and Storage Capabilities[edit]

For Gen9 servers, HP has also redesigned chassis in order to facilitate the task of expanding the server. Thanks to improved scalability, server inners are arranged in a better way, which allows customers to add more HDDs and choose various network controller options. The front panel of DL380 Gen9 is configured to plug in 8+8+8 SFF hard disks. As a basic option, HP embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i that can work with 10 SATA disks and RAID5 arrays. In addition, customers can benefit from the support of 24 SFF drives thanks to P440ar controller. Since HP was able to reduce the PSUs size by 20%, two supplementary hot-swap disks may be plugged-in at the back. The chassis can pick up another 12 LFF drives, plus, it is possible to add another three LFF hard disks using an optional cage.

With reference to the networking capabilities, HP suggests several options, such as the inclusion of HP FlexibleLOM or PCIe adapters in various packages. HP DL380 Gen9 comes with embedded 1Gb 331i Ethernet adapter with four ports per controller in the standard package.

Software[edit]

HP DL380 Gen9 supports versatile server operating systems and virtualization software, including Microsoft Windows Server, Canonical Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Oracle Solaris, VMware, and Citrix XenServer. Other software for DL380 server management include iLO 4 (the last update 2.20), HP Insight Control, HP iLO mobile applications for Android and iOS devices, HP RESTful interface tool, HP OneView, and HP Insight Cluster Management Utility (CMU).

Models[edit]

Depending on specifications, HP offers seven DL380 Gen9 models, including 803860-B21, 803861-B21, 766342-B21, 752689-B21, 752688-B21, 752687-B21, and 752686-B21. Main differences lie in the model of Intel processor used in the server and in the model of DDR4 memory–either Registered DIMM or Load Reduced DIMM; besides, there might be downgrades in networking and storage capabilities. Nevertheless, any HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 server model is upgradable and expandable. Depending on characteristics and online stores' price quotes, DL380 Gen9 server prices start approximately from €2000 excl. VAT.
