On December 5, 2012, Generro Sanchez was murdered in Asher, Oklahoma by Jerrod Murray, a fellow student at East Central University.[1] While Sanchez gave Murray a ride to Walmart in exchange for gas money, Murray pulled a gun on Sanchez and fired a total of two rounds into his head.[2] Murray was charged with first-degree murder and found not guilty by reason of insanity. Murray is currently at a state facility facility receiving mental health treatment.[3]
Background
[edit]Generro Sanchez and Jerrod Murray (born July 20, 1994)[4] were both freshman students at East Central University. Murray revealed to investigators that he planned to kill someone for weeks up to the murder, simply to know what it felt like to have killed someone.[3] He selected Sanchez as his victim.
Murder
[edit]On December 5, 2012, Murray convinced Sanchez to give him a ride to Walmart in exchange for $20. Once they arrived in the Walmart parking lot, Murray pulled a .40-caliber Springfield handgun, stolen from Asher resident Daniel Davis.[5] He ordered Sanchez to drive north of Asher. Sanchez panicked; to ease him, Murray unloaded the weapon and placed the clip in Sanchez's lap. Murray pulls out another loaded clip and places it in his lap.
They arrive on Substation Road where Murray quickly loaded the weapon and fired two rounds at Sanchez; one strikes him in the head, the other misses. The vehicle drifted off the road and struck a tree in a ditch. Murray exits the vehicle and drags Sanchez from out of the driver's seat onto the ground, where he is still breathing. Murray fired a second round into his head again, effectively killing him. He proceeded to cover the corpse in dirt, leaves, and a single stick.[6]
A driver on the same road pulls over and exchanges with Murray. He stated that he was drowsy, crashed off the side of the road, and needed help getting his truck out from the ditch. The driver gives Murray a ride to his grandparent's house where he calls his roommate for help. The roommate calls his parents who don't answer. Murray walks to his roommate's parent's house where he steals a can of WD-40 in an attempt to remove his fingerprints from the crime scene.
Murray walks back to the crime scene, cutting through a woodlot south of Substation Road. Before he reaches the scene, he hears a man cough who he believed to be the same man who gave him a ride earlier—the man called police and reported a gunshot victim upon seeing the corpse. In change of plans, Murray walked east towards US-177 and attempts to hitchhike to Canada. He mistakenly gestured to Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Palmer's vehicle where he was subsequently arrested and immediately confessed to the murder.[3]
