World War One Battleships World War One began a new era of battleships. They were large armored iron ships with heavy naval weapons. The ships were run off of speed turbines making it possible for them not travel at maximum speeds of twenty one knots. [1] Britain had many battleships built during World War One. This caused the German navy to out more funds into their own navy to be able to compete with Britain. The effect of this caused Britain to nearly go bankrupt because of the money needed to make a battleship. [2] German U-Boats were becoming more of a threat and destroying more and more battleships. U-Boats were becoming a sign of power. The U-Boats would even attack merchant ships. [3] Later during World War Two battleships became less of importance and the focus was on aircrafts and aircraft carriers.
