RHINO (Ukrainian: Носоріг) is a feature film by the Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov, shot in 2021.
The Ukrainian premiere of the film is scheduled for 2022.
Synopsis
[edit]Starting out as a petty thief, a young man nicknamed “Rhino” quickly works his way up the criminal hierarchy in 1990’s Ukraine. Rhino has only known power and cruelty, but with nothing left to lose, could he finally find a chance at redemption?
Production
[edit]RHINO is the second feature film by the Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov. In 2012, the film was already presented at the industry platform of the Sofia International Film Festival, where it received awards for Best Project and Best Pitching. However, work on the film was suspended due to Sentsov's illegal arrest by Russian security services in 2014 and his subsequent imprisonment. Work on the project was resumed after the release of the director in 2019. In July 2020, the Council for State Support of Cinematography made a decision to support the film project – funding from the State Agency of Ukraine for Cinematography is fifty percent of the film's budget – 25 100 000 UAH.
Filming of RHINO took place in Kryvyi Rih, Lviv and Kyiv and ended in December 2020.
The film is a co-production of Ukraine, Germany and Poland. The Ukrainian side of production is represented by producer Denis Ivanov (Arthouse Traffic) and Oleg Sentsov's company Krai Kinema. Polish partners are Apple Film Production, German – Ma.ja.de. film company. The international distributor of the film is WestEnd Films.
The film is supported by the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian State Film Agency, the German film fund Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Polish Film Institute, as well as the EURIMAGES Fund, set up by the Council of Europe.
