From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah, hello, I am Jana from Kassel, and I'm feeling like Sophie School (German: Ja, hallo, ich bin Jana aus Kassel is the beginning of a short public speaking, which was held at 21th November 2020 as part of the Querdenken protests in Hanover. In it, the speaker compared herself with the NS-resister and founder of the White Rose, Sophie Scholl, and caused stir not only in Germany, but also internationally, with that.

Wording

[edit]

Yeah, hello, I am Jana from Kassel, and I feel like Sophie Scholl, since I have been active in resistance here for months, holding speeches, attending demonstrations, handing out flyers, and also registering conventions since yesterday. I am twenty-two years old, just like Sophie Scholl before she fell victim to the National Socialists. I can not and I will never give up advocating for freedom, peace, love, and justice!

Publication

[edit]

The speech was published on the same evening held on social media and caused outrage. Big German media, like the Süddeutsche Zeitung,[1] took up the speech. Heiko Maas, former minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, wrote on Twitter: "Whoever compares themself with Sophie Scholl or Anne Frank, mocks the courage that was necessary to show attitude against the Nazis. This triviales the Holocaust and shows an unbearable forgetfulness of history. Nothing connects Corona protests with resistance fighters. Nothing!"[2]

Later, the speech also experienced thematisation in big German comedy shows, e.g. the ZDF Magazin Royale[3] or the Heute-show[4].
