WikiCup 2015 March newsletter
[edit]That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.
Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.
If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thanks to everyone for participating, and good luck to those moving into round 2. Acorazados sudamericanos
[edit]Hi, I just wanted to thank you for taking notice of my ongoing translation of the article about the South American dreadnoughts on the Spanish language Wikipedia. It was a fine gesture of yours. Very interesting article, by the way. --Andrés C. (talk) 09:44, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Andres C.: No, thank you! I'm really happy that the knowledge I've been putting together for several years is being disseminated across various languages. Please let me know if I can help with anything. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:05, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
Dreadnought race
[edit]Hi! Nowadays with google translate you can read those articles. Portuguese is quite similar to Spanish too. Robert Scheina, in Latin America's Wars, wrote about it too. If I find any, I'll send it to you.
Best regards!Brasileiro1500 (talk) 10:09, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
This is the book I meant, not "Latin America's War" but: "Latin America: A Naval History, 1810-1987". It was also written by Robert Scheina.Brasileiro1500 (talk) 13:28, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Brasileiro1500: Exactly my point! But for me, it's not easy to find those online pdfs because I use Google in English. Thanks for pointing me at Scheina—I happen to own them both already, but that's exactly the sort of material I'm looking for. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:04, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
You are welcome! Unfortunately I do not have any text in English on it though, except for Scheina. If I find any, I'll mention them to you. Best regards.Brasileiro1500 (talk) 12:33, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Brasileiro1500: No worries! I'll take anything in Portuguese as well, because like you said I can Google Translate them! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 05:19, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
I have found this other one here as well: http://www.semacip.ufscar.br/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/As-negocia%C3%A7%C3%B5es-para-a-limita%C3%A7%C3%A3o-dos-armamentos-navais-sul-americanos-o-caso-dos-encoura%C3%A7ados-no-per%C3%ADodo-entre-as-guerras-mundiais.pdf .Brasileiro1500 (talk) 14:17, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Brasileiro1500: Whoa, this is a great find! The background sections pretty closely mirror what I've written in the South American dreadnought race article, but the rest of it is really helpful—much of the information I have on the 1920–30s here is only from Argentine perspective (and even then, that is focused on their naval expansion plans). Do you know when this was written and for what journal so I can cite it in Wikipedia articles? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:42, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
It was written by Ludolf Waldmann Júnior, department of Political Science of University of São Carlos, São Paulo.Brasileiro1500 (talk) 00:06, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
WikiCup 2016 March newsletter (update)
[edit]Along with getting the year wrong in the newsletter that went out earlier this week, we did not mention (as the bot did not report) that Cas Liber (submissions) claimed the first Featured Article Persoonia terminalis of the 2016 Wikicup. [edit]Hi Ed. been meaning to get back to you for some time. I passed your request on to my Brazilian counterparts and then actually forgot about this. Now I see it has been translated. Best regards, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 17:00, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Where is the persistent vandalism on this article? I think sporadic, low level, would be more like it. There doesn't seem to be anything to justify a block. 141.6.11.22 (talk) 12:34, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:O class battlecruiser.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:O class battlecruiser.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Silly closure
[edit]When a page in project space is actually a portal in all but name, is it then subject to the portal guidelines? I don't think that's a trivial question, and I think your edits and comments to the contrary are silly and offensive. But, I don't intend to spend a second more of my time trying to convince you of it.Anythingyouwant (talk) 21:18, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Anythingyouwant: You've read the portal guidelines, right? Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 21:58, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- Yes.Anythingyouwant (talk) 22:16, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Anythingyouwant: And you don't see how the Top 25 is completely unlike any other portal in existence? Cf Portal:Contents/Portals. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 22:44, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- Top 25 serves as a Main Page for the most popular Wikipedia content. Just like Portal:Featured content serves as a Main Page for the highest quality Wikipedia content. Every portal is unlike all the others in some way or another, but the common feature is that each one is intended to serve as a Main Page for a specific topic or area.Anythingyouwant (talk) 23:00, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (film), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Telegraph (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
