The Montreal Council on Foreign Relations (MCFR) is a non-profit, non-partisan, private organization. The MCFR was established in Montreal, in 1985, by Professor Louis SabourinCite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page)..

The MCFR’s mission is to promote greater knowledge of international affairs and, through its events and partnerships, to encourage closer cooperation between the various entities that share an interest in international matters[1].

Historique

In 1985, after being active in the OECD OECD, Louis Sabourin founds the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations (MCFR). Gérard Pelletier becomes at the same time the first president [2],[3].

Today, the Montreal Council of Foreign Relations (MCFR) has become a prestigious platform in Montréal especially in the field of international Affairs[4]. Ever-increasing numbers of MCFR members is testament to the organization's value. Only numbering 500 in 2004, as of 2018, the roll call is 4000 strong. In 2018, MCFR events generated coverage by 121 international media outlets in 30 countries[5].

Mission

The mission of MCFR is to promote better knowledge of international affairs and to encourage a closer cooperation between the various entities that share an interest in international matters[6]. The MCFR providing a prestigious platform for distinguished international visitors to Montreal, as well as for Canadians who wish to share their insight and experience on international affairs with Montreal community members[5].

MCFR's events bring together businesses, government departments, para-public organizations, universities, and NGOs via various fields : business, the environment, arts et culture, politics, international development, economic and global affairs. The organization also helps to open the world's door to Montrealers who want to export. Conferences , business luncheons, colloquia, roundtable, and international events all with the goal of making Montreal stand out globally. MCFR also collaborates on many international events with more than 30 organisations[5].

The networking that occurs between local and international heavy hitters reinforces the development of lasting, promising, business relationships, while also attracting foreign investments that contributes to the city's economic vitality[5].

Guests and events

Each year, MCFR invite global figures who present an analysis of the international issues and share their involvement in a field of international relations.

MCFR organizes Le CORIM organise about 30 conferences a year in Montreal (38 in 2018) and welcomes every year more than 10,000 participants in its events[5].

Among its guests in recent years we can mention Doctors Without Borders's international president Dre Joanne Liu[7], Valérie Plante[8], François Hollande[9], Pierre Moscovici[10], Zbigniew Brzeziński[11], Philipe Couillard[12], Paul Magnette[13], Alain Juppé[14], Liam Fox[15] et le Juge Stephen Breyer[16].
