Capulin is a small town in Union County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 101 at the 2000 census. The town is located 3 miles south of Capulin Volcano National Monument. It's name is Spanish for a wild cherry common to Central America and once a staple of American Indians and Spanish settlers.

Vicinity

Capulin is located at the junction of the US 64/87 and State Highway 325 and at the border of Colfax and Union County. It is 29 miles southeast of Raton, 9 miles west of Des Moines and 53 miles west of Clayton. The town lies in the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field that includes Capulin National Monument, Sierra Grande amongst other volcanic peaks and lava fields.

History

After the Civil War, Hispanic farmers settled and named their community Capulin after Capulin Mountain, the cinder cone volcano three miles to the north. The surrounding terrain is considered a western edge of the High Plains. More generally, the geography is considered Steppe, Savannah or Shrub Steppe. The town's population has remained relatively unchanged for decades due to the arid conditions limiting the potential for farming and livestock grazing. However, agriculture remains the primary industry of surrounding area.

A Post Office box was established and it took the name Dedman from 1909 until 1922 in honor of E.J. Dedman, who in 1909 was superintendent of the Atchison-Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. In 1922, the town returned to it original name.

Summers are cooler than typical of the Southwest and winters are cold and snowy. In summer, highs may reach 85 with lows in the 50s. Winter may have warm days in the 60s, but single digit temperatures and snow are common.

Capulin is located at 36°44′31″N 103°59′42″W (36.7419, -103.995).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,282 people, 3,035 households, and 1,981 families residing in the city. The population density was 992.4 people per square mile (383.1/km²). There were 3,472 housing units at an average density of 473.2 per square mile (182.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.04% White, 0.23% African American, 1.59% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 16.19% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 56.96% of the population.

There were 3,035 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,028, and the median income for a family was $31,762. Males had a median income of $24,946 versus $18,433 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,223. About 14.8% of families and 17.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.
