KAHLA/Thueringen Porzellan is the developer and manufacturer of the KAHLA brand porcelain, located in Kahla, Germany.

History

In 1844 Christian J. Eckardt founded the porcelain factory KAHLA in Kahla, Germany. In 1856 August Koch assumed ownership and in 1888 KAHLA was established as a joint stock corporation by Bankhaus Strupp. In spite of economic depressions, KAHLA became a well known brand among German households. By 1914 the company had developed to one of Germany’s leading porcelain manufacturers. After World War II KAHLA became a Soviet stock corporation and was transformed to a state-owned corporation of the German Democratic Republic in 1952. In 1961 the factory and office buildings on the present site were built, and modern tunnel kiln technology was installed. By that time, 50 percent of production was being exported to more than 30 countries. With 17 factories and 18,000 employees, KAHLA was the German Democratic Republic’s centre of porcelain production. In 1991 Treuhand Privatization Agency sold the company. Two years later KAHLA filed for bankruptcy. In 1994 KAHLA was re-founded by Günther Raithel and Thüringer Industriebeteiligungsgesellschaft and the production technologies were modernized. In 2000 the Raithel family became the sole owner of KAHLA. Since its re-founding in 1994 KAHLA has received more than 70 international design awards. Today KAHLA is being exported to over 50 countries and is characterized by individual design, high functionality and a focus on environmental sustainability.
