Introduction[edit]

Eileen Crowe (2 March 1899 - 8 May 1978) was an Irish actress most commonly known for her roles in plays such as The Plough and the Stars[1], Juno and the Paycock[2], and The Shadow of a Gunman[3]. Most of Crowe's performances occurred in the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland between 1921 and 1970.[4][5]

Some of her most prominent appearances were in the works of Irish playwrights such as Teresa Deevy's Katie Roche in 1936,[6][7]1949,[7][8] and 1953,[7][9]and in Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars [1] where she appeared as A Woman from Rathmines[10] [11], Rosie Redmond,[12] and most famously as Bessie Burgess[11] from 1942[13] to 1965.[14] Crowe kept this leading role when she and her fellow Abbey players featured in the film version of The Plough and the Stars directed by John Ford in 1936.[15][16][17] Crowe performed alongside various other Irish actors such as Barry Fitzgerald, Maureen Delaney, and Una O'Connor during her time in the Abbey Theatre and its productions.

Early Life[edit]

Born Alice Isobella[18] in Glasnevin, North Co. Dublin, Eileen Crowe was one of 3 daughters and 4 sons [19] to Moses Crowe, a grocer, and his first wife Theresa Crowe (née Eglinton) who married in 1896[20]. The Crowe family lived in 1 Carlingford Terrace [21] in Glasnevin, North Co. Dublin.

Eileen Crowe's mother, Theresa, died[22] on the 23rd of May, 1909 of carcinoma at the age of 36, her father then married his second wife, Mary, in 1911.[23]

Family Life[edit]

Eileen Crowe began her work in the Abbey Theatre in 1921[4] and married fellow "Abbey star"[24] F.J. McCormick [25] (born Peter Christopher Judge)[26] on December 2nd, 1925[27] in the Roman Catholic Church in Dalkey. The pair performed in hundreds of plays together, mainly in the Abbey Theatre, throughout their marriage.[28][29][30]

Crowe died in 1978[31] and is buried [32] in Deans Grange Cemetery, Blackrock with her husband who died in 1947, aged 56,[33][34] from a brain tumour.
