Star Swamp is a 96 hectare nature reserve of cultural and historical significance in the Suburbs of Marmion, Watermans Bay and North Beach.

Star Swamp History Trail[edit]

Star swamp containing a history trail that spans over a 1.4km walk. The trail contains 10 points of interest each marked with a plaque and sign.


  • 1: Old Sanitation Disposal Site - Before the introduction of Septic Tanks in the 1940's a contractor buried rubbish and toilet refuse of local residents at this site.
  • 2: Old Orchard and Pastoral Lease Site - This area was subdivided for pastoral lease in 1869 - 1870 most was taken by the Hamersley Family. The only remaining evidence of the orchard is a large olive tree on Hope Street that was planted in the 1870's
  • 3: Camel Quarantine Area - Camels imported into Western Australia from India and South Africa in the 1890's for use in the goldfields, so a quarantine area was set up here
  • 4: Stock Route - Star Swamp was a stop for drovers en route from Fremantle from Dongara in the 1800's posts used to tie cattle up to can still be found here.
  • 5: Dairy Cattle Watering Point - This section of Star Swamp was used for watering cattle from Beetles Dairy, Cattle were banned from this area in 1915.
  • 6: Quarry Area - This area was used to mine Marl, a type of clay. For sealing limestone roads.
  • 7: Light Horse Division Watering Point - A platoon of the 10th Light Horse Division of Australia was stationed nearby on coast-watch duties, and often stopped here to collect water supplies.
  • 8: Remnant By-Way - This section of track is all that remains of a larger track that ran from the end of Mary Street to North Beach Road. This track was used by Timeber cutters and residents during the 1950's and 1960's before the construction of Marmion Avenue
  • 9: Aboriginal Camp and Tree - This tree shows scarring traced to Aboriginal people, making items such as sheilds.
  • 10: Drovers Camp and Tree - A large tuart tree marks where drovers camped during the late 1800's and early 1900's on the way to Fremantle

Bush Fires[edit]

Star Swamp has been the target of many bushfires. Due to the number of bushfires deliberatly lit in recent years a $50,000 reward has been placed on information leading directly to the apprehension of the offender.
