Christopher Reinhart (born 6 August 1998)[1] is an Indonesian author and historian. He is one of the few Indonesian historians who focuses on the late part of Indonesia's colonial period. Reinhart also produced writings on the history of agrarian Southeast Asia, especially Java, along with the cultural background of the people.[2][3][4][5] His work entitled Mempertahankan Imperium: Gubernur Jenderal Tjarda van Starkenborgh-Stachouwer dan Akhir Hindia Belanda (Maintaining the Empire: Governor-General Tjarda van Starkenborgh-Stachouwer and the Collapse of the Dutch East Indies) was published by Marjin Kiri in November 2021.[6] It remained as the only research on the Dutch East Indies colonial government under Governor-General Alidius Tjarda van Starkenborgh-Stachouwer (1936 to 1942) written by an Indonesian historian. His work has been reviewed by prominent Indonesian newspaper Kompas and other media.[6][7]

Controversy[edit]

On 19 August 2020, Reinhart represented Peter Carey to convey Carey's position and some archival findings to the press and the general public regarding the controversy over the unlawful use of Carey's name in a documentary film, Jejak Khilafah di Nusantara (2020).[8][9] Reinhart and Carey released a statement that, until then (2020), there had not been any archival evidence showing a historical relationship between the kingdoms in Java and the Ottoman Empire as it was claimed in the documentary. This statement of attitude caused a strong reaction from the filmmakers and some Islamic figures such as Tengku Zulkarnain who interacted with Reinhart on Twitter.[10]
