Tiago Timponi Torrent is a Brazilian linguist working on multimodal Natural Language Processing. He is a professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora [1], where he also coordinates the Graduate Program in Linguistics [2] and the and the FrameNet Brazil Computational Linguistics Laboratory [3].

Education

Tiago Torrent graduated in Portuguese and Latin from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in 2003. In 2005, he completed a master's degree in Linguistics at the same university, under the guidance of Professor Margarida Salomão. He earned his Ph.D. at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2009, under the guidance of Professor Maria Luiza Braga. His doctoral dissertation [4] [5] proposes two mechanisms governing the relation between inheritance and constructional change within the Construction Grammar paradigm.

Career

Tiago Torrent joined the Department of Letters and the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in 2010 [6]. Since then, he has been leading applied research in the field of natural language processing at the FrameNet Brazil Computational Linguistics Laboratory [7]. Among these projects are applications for the general public, such as the FrameNet Brazil Dictionary of the World Cup [8], [9], as well as partnerships with NGOs and public sectors for the development of Artificial Intelligence applications in monitoring gender-based violence in urban areas [10], [11].

He also works in promoting Computational Linguistics and Generative Artificial Intelligences through lectures [12], and articles for the press [13].

International Partnerships

Torrent is one of the partners in the Global FrameNet initiative [14].

Since 2019, he has collaborated with Mark Turner, the leader of the International Distributed Little Red Hen Lab, both as a mentor in the Google Summer of Code [15] program and in the development of research in the use of generative AIs as assistants for linguistic research [16].

Since 2022, he has been working as a collaborating researcher at the International Multimodal Communication Centre at the University of Oxford [17].

Awards

Tiago Torrent received, in 2021, the ABRALIN Award for Technology and Innovation in Linguistic Research, granted by the Brazilian Linguistics Association [18].
