Bell Island is a small island located just off the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. It’s approximately 34 square kilometres with something to see on every corner. The only way accessible to Bell Island is by a ferry that runs from Portugal Cove to Bell Island. The ferry ride is approximately 20 minutes. You could easily fill half a day or even a full day at Bell Island and the history of this small island that was once a booming mining town is so interesting! Bell Island Community Museum/ Mine Tour

One of the most popular things for visitors to do while visiting Bell Island is doing a tour of the #2 Mine located at the Bell Island Community Museum. Above ground is the museum with so many unique pieces of history on display. Through the museum, you go below to the entrance of the mine. A tour guide will take visitors and descend into the mines where many things are left intact from as early as when the mines started in the early 1900s. The mine tour is an amazing experience. It takes about an hour to complete and be sure to bring a sweater or a coat because deep down in the mind it’s only approximately 6 degrees Celsius. Don’t miss it!

Signal Hill

Signal Hill is a National Historic site. Loved by locals and tourists alike, it gives breathtaking views and has incredible hiking and walking trails. Signal Hill has deep historic roots in the harbour defences of St. John’s including the period of WWII. The very first transatlantic signal was received at Signal Hill in 1901 by Guglielmo Marconi. Signal Hill is very likely the most popular landmark on the island. Don’t skip the opportunity to take in the Cabot Tower atop the hill and rediscover some of the histories it has to offer.

Puffin & Whale Watching

Newfoundland has an astonishing population of Puffins on the island. There is an estimated 600,000 + population of puffins on the island. Adorable and petite, these little birds are well-loved and such a treat to see in person.

Puffins arrive in early May and can be viewed in large numbers through mid-September. Whale sightings typically peak in mid-June through to mid-August, however, it is still possible to see them outside of peak season but it’s more sporadic. Cape Spear National Historic Site

Cape Spear Lighthouse is the most Easterly point in North America. It is the oldest surviving lighthouse on the island as it was built in 1836. This is the best 8 Days Itinerary for the Avalon Region. The following are examples of things you can do while you are visiting the Avalon.

Day 1:The best 8 Days Itineraries for the Avalon

Arrived at St Johns International Airport, obtained your rental car and headed to your hotel to get check-in, refresh, recharge your phone and put your luggage away in your room. You can start your vacation by visiting Signal Hill. On your drive to the top of the hill, you can stop at the coffee shop to get snacks and water. While you are in the coffee shop visit the Visitor Canter to ask any questions. Once you are at the top of Signal Hill get out and explore the tower and go for a walk on the boardwalk trail down the mountainside. On your down from Signal Hill stop in at the Johnson GEO Center to experience the different astonishing displays.

Day 2:

Experience the Atlantic Ocean by heading out on a boat tour to watch the different whales and icebergs drift along the shoreline.  This is the best way to have a close-up encounter with thousand years old icebergs and if you are a lackey you may see multiple whales breaching out of the water. From here visit the closest park to have a picnic lunch, or snack just to relax and take the time to share your experience with your friends and family on social media.

Day 3:

Visit Cape Spear national historic site which is the most easterly point in North America. After you leave Cape Spear head out to visit Witless Bay Ecological Reserve then drive out to Ferryland, in Ferryland you will find the Colony of Avalon and the most beautiful lighthouse built on the side of the mountain, perfect to overlook the entire bay.  

Day 4:

Take a trip to Dildo and visit the Dildo Brewing Company and museum which is located on the waterfront with seating available on the deck. While you are in Dildo it would be worth it to do the Dildo Boat Tour. This will give you a second view of the whales and dolphins that swim in the great Atlantic Ocean. Before you start your journey back to St johns have lunch at the Brewing Company. On your drive back ensure you take the scenic root which is driving along the coastline and through the small community along the way.    

Day 5 to 6:

Take a tour or walk around downtown St Johns be sure to visit George Street. There are a lot of jelly beans rows for you to take pictures of in the downtown area. After you finish your downtown adventure take a walk around Quidi Vidi lake and venture out to see the small picturesque village. You can have lunch at the Mallard Cottage and take a guided tasting tour at the Quidi Vidi Brewery.

Day 7 to 8:  

Take a trip to Bell Island to visit the mine and museum. The Ferry will take you and your car over to the island. This is a 25-minute Ferry boat ride. Ensure you sit on the top deck of the boat you will enjoy the coastline view of Portugal Cove. The Bell Island Museum has a guided tour that will take you through the mine. You will be accompanied by a tour guide who will explain different sections and give a history of the mine operation.  After finishing, your tour of the mine drives around the island to explore.
