Morna, Greece
[edit]Morna (Greek: Μόρνα), also known as "Skotina" (Σκοτεινά), is an abandoned village located in the Pierian Mountains of Greece[1], at an elevation of 700 meters. The village has been uninhabited for years and is considered by many to be haunted, having its name tied to numerous secrets and legends.
Etymology
[edit]There are two prevailing theories regarding the origin of the village's name. One suggests that Morna is named "Skotina" because it is built in a hollow where sunlight scarcely penetrates due to dense vegetation. Another theory proposes that the village's name derives from the numerous mulberry trees (Morus) and brambles (Rubus) found in the surrounding area.
History
[edit]Morna was once a bustling village, home to the State Wood Processing Factory. However, the closure of the factory in 1967 led to the village's decline. With fewer job opportunities, the remaining residents relocated a few kilometers north to establish a new village called Foteina. The mass abandonment of Morna contributed to its reputation as a "haunted" village.
Legends and Haunted Reputation
[edit]The village of Morna is steeped in legends and ghost stories, which have contributed to its eerie reputation. Some of the most notable legends include:
- The Dancing Girls: According to local lore, seven girls would dance ecstatically around the village at night. Terrified villagers would hide in their homes, not daring to venture out until dawn, when the girls would retreat to a cave at the mountain's peak, waiting for midnight to resume their dance.
- The Hairy Hand: Another story speaks of a "hairy hand" that chased those who crossed its path. This hand was said to emerge from an abandoned house once occupied by a young man who emigrated to America. As the house fell into disrepair, the legend of the "curse he left behind" grew, deterring villagers from passing by.
- Eerie Phenomena: Various accounts mention doors opening and closing on their own, disembodied voices, and other spine-chilling occurrences. Other stories describe ghostly sounds and shadows appearing out of nowhere.
Modern Interest
[edit]Today, Morna has become a popular subject among Greek YouTubers. The village's ghostly tales and abandoned state have inspired numerous adventure videos on the well-known platform, capturing the imaginations of viewers and adding to the mystique of this "ghost" village.
