Oars + Alps is an American brand of high-end men’s skincare founded in 2015 and formally launched late 2016. Oars + Alps sells direct to consumer and launched with three products. Their feature product is a solid charcoal face wash, sold in the form of a roll on stick.

History[edit]

The company was founded in 2015 by Mia Saini Duchnowski and Laura Lisowski Cox, who became good friends when they were living abroad in Hong Kong. The name " Oars + Alps " was inspired by their husbands love for outdoor sports, Mia’s husband is a competitive rower and both husband are avid skiers and snowboarders.

Oars + Alps was started because the founders were frustrated with finding effective, cost efficient, and convenient brands that focused on men’s skin and their active lifestyles. Mia’s husband is prone to skin cancer, Laura’s husband has extremely dry skin.

The company was self-funded in the spring of 2015 with each of the founders contributing out of their savings. In spring of 2016 the company won the regional Harvard Venture Competition, securing funding and access to legal services. Shortly after launching, the company was covered by Esquire and GQ[1].

Business model[edit]

The company primarily sells products online and allows customers to select a one -time purchase or a subscription service. The product containers are designed to be spill proof and TSA-approved at 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

The company is heavily driven by data in both product development and marketing. From surveys, focus groups, ethnographic research, and online behavior.

Products[edit]

Oars + Alps formulates custom products for men and sells directly to customers (DTC). Their first three products are listed below and are made with natural ingredients. They all include a lichen, referred by the company as Alpine Caribous Moss, which has powerful anti-aging properties because of the harsh conditions where it grows in the Arctic.

The company's products have been featured in WSJ[2], Bloomberg[3], Esquire[4], GQ, Men’s Journal, CNBC[5], Valet Mag [6] and others.
