Philanthropy

[edit]

In 2010 Michele Sciurba founded the gallery Art Virus. In 2014, together with Werner Ost, he founded the publishing house Edition Faust. [6] Faust Kultur GmbH, co-founded in 2014 together with Art Virus and Werner Ost, manages the Faust-Kultur-Stiftung, a non-profit foundation under the direction of Ulla Bayerl, that promotes culture, art, literature and music and supports authors through the online magazine Faust Kultur. [7] In cooperation with the Instituto Cervantes and the Institut français, Sciurba facilitated socio-critical discussions of migration and exclusion, including: “Die Stadt verwandeln: Europäische Literatur als Gesellschaftskritik” (Transform the city: European literature as social criticism) at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse) which included Yannick Haenel, Nicolò Bassetti and the Spanish architectural collective Basurama. [8] Sciurba financially supports projects that promote cultural diversity and strengthen grass roots democracy, including the 2012 exhibition and book publication Occupy – New York, Frankfurt: Eine Bewegung, die keine sein dürfte (Occupy – New York, Frankfurt: A movement that shouldn’t be one), which received national attention [9] and the 2014 exhibition and panel discussion of La Frontera: Die mexikanische-US-amerikanische Grenze und ihre Künstler (La Frontera: The Mexican-US American border and its artists), which received international acclaim in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Vanguardia Mexico and the New York Times. [10] [11] Since 2018, Sciurba has supported the project Textland. Made in Germany, a collection of contemporary German literature from authors with migrant backgrounds. [12] Against the backdrop of his own migrant background, Sciurba’s speeches, public appearances and writings voice strong opposition to all forms of anti-Semitism, antiziganism and discrimination. In 2014 Sciurba launched the Art Virus Salon, which in cooperation with the Frankfurt Chamber Opera (Kammeroper Frankfurt) hosts musical and literary evenings with national and international musicians and authors, offering a space for cultural encounters and exchange. [13] Michele Sciurba is also a supporting member of the Frankfurt Art Association (Frankfurter Kunstverein). [14]
