New article name goes here is a book club founded in November 1994 by Wilene Dennis Dozier and Felice Franklin.[1] They attended a reading and book signing by Tina McElroy Ansa at The Bookmark book store in Neptune Beach, Florida and noticed that there were few black persons in attendance. The book club has been meeting continuously since that time. It is the oldest and largest book club in Jacksonville, Florida comprised of people of color. Members select fiction and non fiction books written by black authors and/or about the black experience in America. The book club partners with the Jacksonville Public Library on several events and is an ardent supporter of local authors and independent bookstores.
History
[edit]The book club met at Felice's house in 1994 with five members: Gregory Miller, James. The members decided that they would alternate reading fiction and non fiction books and would meet monthly. The acronym PRIDE means People Reading for Inspiration Discussion and Enjoyment after a debate ensued after Gregory suggested the name We Be Readin'. The book club has met continuously since November 1994. Every anniversary the book club selects a published author to attend and read a selection and sell his or her book.
