Marko Juhant is a Slovenian special education teacher, lecturer and author, specialising in behavioural, emotional, and personality disorders. Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Juhant has also held the position of deputy principal. He is also the author of sixteen parenting books and a co-author of two picture books.[1]

Education

[edit]

The experience from the student dormitory sparked in him an interest in education. Namely, he noticed that the relationship between the students and professors was based on fear. He felt like they did not get clear instructions on what they have to do but were punished for their mistakes nevertheless. He believed that he could be a much better educator than his professors.[2]

Upon completing his high school education, he enrolled in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ljubljana, pursuing a dual degree with a focus in behavioural and personality disorders. After his graduation, Juhant began his career as an educator in a youth home for children with special needs. He continued his career at Youth care centre Malči Belič in Ljubljana, where he also undertook the role of deputy principal. In 2020 Juhant decided to continue his professional career on his own with a collaboration project in Slovenia called Vzgoja.si. This was followed by the initiation of an international endeavor, StrategicParenting, in 2021.[3]

Parenting approach

[edit]

In 2011, Juhant co-authored his first book titled "Varuh otrokovih dolžnosti".[4] In his books, lectures, and seminars, he advocates for "parenting through action" rather than through instruction.[5]

This is in line with what Juhant terms as a common sense approach to parenting. For example, when asked whether the permissive parenting was the cause for growing rates of peer violence, he answered:

“I've got no problem with gentle parenting, if you've got a calm kid. But if you've got a wild child, that approach isn't going to work. The kid will just take what they think is theirs, cause a scene and create chaos, especially if it gets you flustered.” [6]

Juhant places a child in the centre of his parenting approach. The four core values his approach is built upon are:

  1. Child’s Purpose: Juhant sees  that every child carries within them a unique talent and that with the help of an encouraging environment, they can express and shape it into their own unique life purpose.
  2. Love for Freedom: According to Juhant, freedom is not unconditional, nor does it mean idleness or aimless wandering. It is the planning of activities and everyday events and experiences within the set boundaries. He argues that parents will want to instil a love for true, all-encompassing freedom in their children.
  3. Unshakable Integrity: Juhant deems parents as role models to whom children can look up to. As such, parents should take responsibility for their actions, be honourable, and always speak the truth.
  4. Dedication and Humanity: Juhant maintains that parents should teach their children how to be human to another human – how to listen, recognise others’ emotions, and how to help others. To teach children to always do the right thing.[7]

Personal life

[edit]

Juhant has a wife Irena, two children and a dog Dante. He enjoys working with wood, steel and stone, making model airplanes and mosaics. He is also an avid sailor and enjoys spending time outdoors.[8]
