Achilles Lepidas was a Greek poet, founder of the Lyceum Lepidas Greek School (known as 'ELLAS') and a prominent member of the Greek community in Melbourne, Australia.

Early life[edit]

Achilles Lepidas was born on the 10th February 1926 in Lamia in central Greece. During the Axis occupation of Greece, he joined the National Liberation Front as part of the Greek Resistance. His father was involved in the destruction of the Gorgopotamos and Asopos viaducts in November 1942 as part of Operation Harling. Achilles migrated to Melbourne, Australia in March 1957 after suffering political persecution from the Greek government of the time [1].

Australia[edit]

He established his Greek language school, abbreviated to 'ELLAS' (Lyceum Lepidas Greek School), soon after arriving and began establishing campuses across the city. The original school was located in Fitzroy North, an inner suburb of Melbourne [2] and at his property in Mount Evelyn [3]. By 1996, over 18,000 students had attended the school [1].

Achilles also bought other properties in Melbourne, including in East Ringwood [4].
