In onomatology, Cotrim is a portuguese surname. In Portugal the oldest news of this family dates back to the fourteenth century in the person of Martim Cotrim, from Évora in 1383, as Fernão Lopes says.  Name cited in the Book of Nobility and Perfection of Arms.

History[edit]

A significant number of genealogists claim that it came to Portugal in the person of the English, Jaime Cotrim and Heitor Cotrim and that Jaime Cotrim previously joined the troops of the Duke of Lancaster, who in 1381 came to help the Portuguese in their fight against Castile.

Already in Portugal the two brothers, Jaime and Heitor Cotrim will have exercised, on the threshold of the fifteenth century, the first, the position of monteiro-mor of Infante D. Henrique, Duke of Viseu, and the second that of spear pajem of Afonso V, however before the lack of coevise documents that mention these nobles arise some studies that point to a Portuguese origin and others still speak in an Italian branch of a Quatrino family.

Jaime Cotrim was born England, where your name was typed as “James Cottrell” (from Catterall family), having passed to Portugal following the princess Felipa de Lancaster, intended to marry dom João I in 1387. In Portugal, Catterall turned into a Cotrim. Catteral is a toponymic english surname, from Lancashire, possibly came from old nordic kattar-hali, cat tail, perhaps refers to a narrow and large piece of land.

Jaime Cotrim was the counselor of the infante Dom Henrique and married to Anne de Ufford (or Ana Canas de Urofol) had as son João Martins Canas Cotrim, who lived in the farm of Souto de Ereira in the Solar dos Cotrim married to Maria Álvares de Sá had the children from which the Cotrim descended.

In Portugal, in the town of Ferreira do Zêzere, in the parish of Paio Mendes is located, in Souto de Ereira the oldest manor of this family. There lived the fidalgo Lopo Martins Canas Cotrim, from whom several of the families with this nickname that exist all over the world, with special focus on Portuguese-speaking countries, descend. In Brazil there are a several branches of the Cotrim family, originated from a lot of members of the same. One of these, which left numerous offspring, it originates from the arrival, named Antonio Xavier de Carvalho Cotrim, from Lisboa to Bahia. There is still the branching of the powerful Cutrim family in Maranhão

There is a high possibility that all Cotrim have direct descent with James Catterall, presenting a high homogeneity rate

The city of Ilhabela in interior of São Paulo was foundes by a Cotrim in 1805.

Cotrim currency[edit]

Cotrim (moeda) The Cotrim was a portuguese currency used in the time of Afonso V de Portugal.

One might think that the Coin of Cotrim may have been minted in honor or inspired by this family. There are some indictments that can support this thesis.
