Youth With A Mission (YWAM, generally pronounced /ˈwaɪwæm/ or “WHY-wham”) Harbour City in 1992 began ministering at its current location in Kam Tin, Yuen Long, New Territories of Hong Kong.[1] YWAM Harbour City is one of three YWAM bases in Hong Kong, although the city is also home to several other YWAM ministries.[2]
History
[edit]YWAM first came to Hong Kong in 1979 when a School of Evangelism (SOE)[3] outreach team from Kona, Hawaii felt the Lord call them to come and work with refugees during the Vietnamese refugee crises of 1975-1979 in Hong Kong.[4] In 1980, YWAM Hong Kong was founded with Gary and Helen Stephens as the directors.[5] Over the years YWAM Hong Kong had many programs and ministries develop in reaching out to different parts of Hong Kong as well as fulfilling the call to go out into the nations of the earth.
Name
[edit]Harbour City is a combination of two aspects of Hong Kong's name. Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港) means Fragrant Harbour or Incense Harbour.[6][7] A harbour is a place where treasures come and go, the treasure in this case being its people; they come in to YWAM Harbour City from the nations and are sent out to bring Jesus' love to the world. Hong Kong is also known as the City of Life.[8] YWAM Harbour City claims this name as a prophetic promise. YWAM Harbour City actively work to see the Kingdom of God bring LIFE to the Fragrant City – Hong Kong!
