User:Zackmann08/unused templates/notes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is based off of a quarry query.

  • It currently ignores templates containing 'stub', '/sandbox', '/testcases' and a few other strings (shown below) in the title, along with templates in certain categories.

If you want to see the latest version of the query, please see https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/33749.

Suggested improvements

[edit]
Please add comments below in bullet point form of any changes you would like to see to the query. I will strike as I implement them. Thanks!!! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:06, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Have a sub-page for Metadata templates. --Gonnym (talk) 15:47, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
  • This should exclude templates that transclude {{nosubst}} {{Subst only}} in the docs subpage or the template itself (with the possible exception of {{nosubst}} {{Subst only}} itself, but this edge case is probably unlikely to fall to 0 transclusions.) eπi (talk | contribs) 00:58, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
    • @E to the Pi times i: could you explain why these should be excluded? From what I understand of what {{nosubst}} means, it's just a notice that the templates should be transcluded and not substituted, which is what we are searching for. So a template that has that notice but has 0 transclusions is still unused. What am I missing? --Gonnym (talk) 13:38, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
      • @Gonnym: Oops, you're right, I meant to say Subst only. eπi (talk | contribs) 13:41, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
        • Now that makes sense. I think that template is already coverd though. The doc at that template page says that pages using that template get placed in Category:Wikipedia substituted templates and that category appears in the query here. Did you find templates on this list that have that tag? --Gonnym (talk) 13:45, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
          • I'm pretty sure I did have an example, but unfortunately I don't believe I wrote it down specifically. I'll search around my browser history a bit to see if I can find it. eπi (talk | contribs) 13:48, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
            • Sure. Also note that it might have been tagged with that template after the list was generated. Until Zack returns and generates an updated list, it will still be there. --Gonnym (talk) 13:58, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
              • @Gonnym: Funnily enough, it's one of your recent RMs: {{Citationrequired}} (unfortunately, this has now been completely replaced instead of moved; I'll probably set up a sandbox duplicate in template namespace soon to see if it's caught by the next run of the query.) has {{Subst only}}, but it's still on this list. I'm still trying to determine what caused it to show up.
              • It's not a caching with the Zack's list, because the doc had the note when the template was created. Maybe |auto= doesn't populate the template into Category:Wikipedia substituted templates? eπi (talk | contribs) 14:04, 5 May 2019 (UTC)
                • @Gonnym: Nope, it's definitely in the category (or there's the off-chance that it's cached in the category but it hasn't updated, but that seems unlikely). eπi (talk | contribs) 14:05, 5 May 2019 (UTC) (edited 11:30, 13 May 2019 (UTC))
  • Count templates that are used only on their own documentation/sandbox/testcases pages as unused. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:07, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
