Maliebaan Dutch word for the court where an outdoor lawn game was played that was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. A ball was hit with a mallet-like stick towards a goal. The name derives from the French Jeu de Mail. The game was a form of ground billiards, and the precursor of modern games like golf, croquet and billiards. The word is still found in modern topography in the Netherlands, referring to its origin. Examples are the Maliebaan street in Utrecht and the Malieveld in The Hague.
