History[edit]

Delgado Drive was named after Isaac Delgado. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1839 and moved to New Orleans with his aunt and uncle in the Garden District when he was 14 years old. He worked for his uncle's sugar company and joined the Louisiana Sugar Exchange as a charter member.[1] Over the years, he became a very wealthy businessman from his sugar and molasses business. When he died in 1912, He donated his plantation, Albania, and approximately one million dollars to an all-boys trade school in 1909[1]. He also donated money to a Charity Hospital,[2] which was a non-profit hospital that catered to people who couldn't afford medical treatment.[3] In addition, he donated money to other hospitals such as The Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and to the New Orleans Convalescent Home.[1] Delgado believed in education and the impacts it has on children. In1921, he opened a trade school, which is now known as Delgado Community College, as well as opened an art museum in a city park; which soon became the Delgado Museum of Art, which houses $200 million dollars worth of art.[1]

Demographics[edit]

Delgado Drive is located in a residential area, where many single-family homes are being built or already established. Even though New Orleans has a city metropolitan area, Delgado Drive has more of a suburban environment. This area is mostly surrounded by restaurants and museums. There's not a lot of clubs, hookah lounges, or bars around.

Home prices[edit]

Many homes around this area are expensive due to the location, crime rate, and style of the homes. A single-family home can cost approximately around $500,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the type of house[4].

Schools[edit]

Delgado drive is apart of a Lakeview school district. It hosts 12 public schools. According to the U.s.News, it near one of the top HBCUs in the world, as well as near one of the top community colleges in Louisiana.[4]
