RateYourBurn (RateYourBurn LLC) is an online platform that applies a social rating to fitness classes. RateYourBurn was founded by Gillian Casten in February 2011 in New York, NY. [1]

RateYourBurn serves as both a resource to class-goers and as a marketing platform for fitness instructors; in essence, "a Yelp for the fitness community." [2] The rating platform permits users to rate their fitness classes, and ratings roll up to two entities – the instructor and the gym. The RateYourBurn rating platform is currently live in New York with plans for nationwide roll out by year-end 2012. [1]

RateYourBurn also operates a fitness blog that features anonymous reviews from RateYourBurn’s team of group fitness enthusiasts, covering a range of classes including yoga, indoor cycling, bootcamp, TRX, and Lotte Berk. The RateYourBurn blog currently serves the New York, Boston, and Los Angeles fitness communities. [3]

History

[edit]

RateYourBurn LLC was founded by Gillian Casten in February 2011.

RateYourBurn launched its blog in September 2011. Its team of anonymous bloggers rate group fitness activities in New York, Boston and Los Angeles, stressing the importance of the instructor in the class experience. Content includes class reviews, gym/studio reviews, interviews with celebrity instructors, and fitness-themed trending lists. [3] Celebrity instructors that have been featured on RateYourBurn include Richard Simmons, Tara Stiles of Strala Yoga, Holly Rilinger of FlyWheel Sports, Keoni Hudoba of SoulCycle, and Joey Gonzalez of Barry's Bootcamp.

In November 2011, RateYourBurn was featured on Bloomberg Television as a tool to “help gym rats track their favorite instructors, and help instructors link up with students.” [4]

In May 2012, RateYourBurn launched a private beta version of its rating platform [1], and in June 2012 it launched publicly in New York. [5]

As of July 2012, the RateYourBurn New York database houses over 17,000 instructors and 6,000 gyms, with over 1,300 user reviews contributed. [6]

Team

[edit]

Founder Gillian Casten worked for two years in private equity at Fortress Investment Group before leaving to pursue RateYourBurn. The project arose out of Casten’s own need for a tool to find New York City’s best instructors. [4]

RateYourBurn partners with Brooklyn-based development firm HappyFunCorp, as well as with an offshore data team.
