A note about capitalization for the Beatles

[edit]

I saw you were making some edits concerning the Beatles. I'm pretty sure that "the" should not be capitalized, because it is not capitalized in the body of the article at the page the Beatles (it is capitalized in the title since the start of a title is always capitalized). This is a featured article, so I'd trust that its grammar is largely correct, particularly for matters concerning the subject of the article.

Of course, at the start of a sentence, it makes sense to capitalize "the". Consider "The Beatles are my favorite band." vs. "I love the Beatles." Just wanted to let you know before you make a bunch of changes. Thanks! palindrome§ǝɯoɹpuᴉןɐd 03:21, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies

[edit]

Sorry i just assumed that due to the fact the official website for the band has both names capitalised, you'd take their word for how the grammar should be used, as well as that their trademark is The Beatles, you would assume that their whole name should be capitalised? Sorry if there's an annoying amount of un-editing to do, i'll go through and change that if you'd like me to. 144.138.41.64 (talk) 03:35, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about it – I think everything has been changed back now, and I think a lot of editors understand that it can be hard getting started on Wikipedia. For general questions about getting started, feel free to ask any questions about Wikipedia at the Teahouse, the help forum for new editors.
If you want to see some reasoning behind why "the" is not capitalized, feel free to take a look at this link: Talk:The_Beatles/Archive_21#Capitalization—use_of_"The"_mid-sentence. By the way, that discussion is inactive and archived, so don't reply to it, because people probably wouldn't see what you said.
Wikipedia operates based on what is called "consensus" (see WP:CONS). To briefly summarize, it's the idea that, if different editors have different ideas about how things should be done on Wikipedia (for example, "Should it be The Beatles or the Beatles?"), they and other editors discuss what should be done and come to a consensus decision.
Consensus can change, but because it's been the consensus for a while that it's "the Beatles", I wouldn't recommend introducing a new discussion (if you do decide to discuss it again, start a new thread at Talk:the Beatles). It can be hard to know what the consensus is for various topics, so feel free to make edits that you feel are correct (for more, see WP:BOLD), but be ready for them to be undone if they go against the consensus – it happens! If there is no consensus yet on some issue, then feel free to start a discussion on the article's talk page (for more info on talk pages, see WP:TALKPAGE).
Let me know if you have any follow-up questions, and happy editing! palindrome§ǝɯoɹpuᴉןɐd 22:44, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
