Byzantine Empire
[edit]Hello; you've added quite a lot of sourced material to the Byzantine Empire article. Much of it is of quite varied quality; some is quite confusing and difficult to read; at least to me. Rather than rewriting, and missing any essentials in what you wrote, would you consider rewriting, just a bit at a time, with an eye to clarity of meaning? Regards, Haploidavey (talk) 19:25, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- That's it! I am a recent student of Byzantinism and I have certain problems with English so I apologize for that, as for the changes I made on the page I admit that I tried to use all my knowledge with the English language so my fault! :/ I think I unintentionally reversed the changes, I also apologize for that, although I would greatly appreciate your help to improve or paint a clear idea of the information provided. 181.67.237.241 (talk) 19:35, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Aha... I thought that might be the case, if only through your conributions to date. I started to undo my removal of content added by yourself, then realised I'd only be sowing further confusion. Your restoration of what you'd added (removed by me) was fair enough, in the circumstances, but (as you acknowledge) it still needs work, to avoid errors of interpretation. What set me wondering in the first place was your substitution of "monarch" for "emperor", in your very first change. It introduces more questions than answers. I'd be happy to go through what you've written, but others who have the article on their watchlists will likely be more useful in this respect. My own focus tends to be on Roman eras and culture(s); I have very limited access to scholarly works that deal with Byzantium. As a general rule, however, avoid adding whenever possible, unless the article really needs it. And make sure that every word is pulling its own weight (unlike the Byzantine writers and scholars - ha ha!). Again, regards to you. Oh yes, and I write very slowly. very slowly...Haploidavey (talk) 19:53, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- As to why the changes and specifically why I changed emperor to monarch. In short, that is what the Byzantines thought of the head of their state, they saw him, called him and venerated him as a king or monarch, the word Basileus and Basileus ho megas carry that denotation so I did nothing more than give the true meaning to the word. As for the rest of the changes and editions that I made, they were in pages whose information was worryingly backward and outdated to the modern fields of Byzantinism, for example in the section of bureaucracy and aristocracy of Byzantium, the article denied the autocratic power of the emperor and the lack of Hellenic and Christian heritage in each of them was equally troubling and missleading. Also most of my edits were made on multiple pages with major lack citations, to which I added and contributed a lot, I don't see why my edit should be reversed given my honest input and constant support in the sources. 181.67.237.241 (talk) 20:34, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Your edits are not reversed. Please accept my apologies; I'm in no fit state to be editing. When I realised what I'd done, and tried to undo it (with an explanation in the edit summary box), we had an edit conflict. As you'll see from the article history, your contributions still stand. Apologies once again. Haploidavey (talk) 06:21, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
