Merge proposal...

[edit]

You really shouldn't propose merges without putting your reasoning on the talk page first. Ie, that's what the "Discuss" link is for on the template you've placed. As for your proposal - I don't agree. THese are two distinct concepts - one is that of an indigenous australian, the other is about the specific and numerous groups (ie, the latter is more of a list). I think that is distinction enough. regards --Merbabu (talk) 07:48, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The names are synonymous so I figured the reason would be obvious. There's a ton of overlap, but whatever, if you like it like that then we'll leave it. Not a big deal. 2ndAccount (talk) 07:54, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Some overlap is inevitable in wikipedia - eg, we have a history section in the Australia article, and we have a number of History of Australia articles. Also, there is inevitable overlap between, say, John Lennon and The Beatles. The key is to find the right balance between unnecessary repetition (ie, no-one wants mirror articles) and keeping articles complete in their own right. Yes, a balancing act - but with a little common sense, it's not hard. Thus, rather than a merge, perhaps you've highlighted some items to be trimmed from one or the other? I don't know myself, I don't really know either article in great detail - I can just see that they are two similar but distinct concepts. cheers --Merbabu (talk) 08:03, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's fine as it is. As someone not that familiar with the topic, I just thought it would make more sense if they were combined, but looking at them again, a merge would be quite challenging and Indigenous Australians is long enough already, so I guess it makes sense. (Thanks for the welcome. Heh, I welcomed myself in hopes of avoiding that template. I've been on WP for years... hehe) 2ndAccount (talk) 08:16, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Second account

[edit]

Hi there, which is your main account? You should redirect this account's userpage to that account's userpage, so people can connect the two. Tim Vickers (talk) 20:20, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you see, I intentionally left out that information... I used to be seriously addicted to Wikipedia and really involved in the community/politics. I had to take a involuntary wikibreak due to real life issues. Those issues are still at hand and I should still be on my break, but you know how it is—you see a typo or something on a wiki page and you just can't help yourself; one thing leads to another. Editing anonymously only gets you so far (so many semiprotected pages now). I created this account so I can do some light editing without all the social and editorial ties of my other account. It would be too much pressure to start editing regularly again, which would not be good right now. So I would like to not make the connection just quite yet. When I resume using my main account, I'll retire this one and do the redirects and all that, but until then I'm just some unknown wikignome. :-) 2ndAccount (talk) 01:49, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, since this is clearly a second account, per name, edits and experience, it is unlikely to be abused in any way - that would be too obvious to be sensible. I'll therefore not press you more closely, but if you wish to avoid any possible drama in the future, you know that have the possibility of notifying arbcom in confidence through the mailing list (or more securely just by e-mail to an individual member). Otherwise, thank you for continuing to contribute and if I can help in any way please e-mail me or drop me a note on my talkpage. All the best Tim Vickers (talk) 04:21, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm not really worried about any future dramaz, it's not my style. I'm a pretty non-controversial guy. Oh, and I picked this name for that exact reason. If I picked a name not so obvious, I'd probably never get questioned, but then it would look like I created it to do some sockpuppet-ish things. I just want to be an "auto-confirmed anon" for a bit.
