Egyptian whatsits

[edit]

Hi, let's be friends. And how do you change the contents of list of hieroglyphs? I added something to the talk page about the identities of the objects, but haven't edited following. What do you think of the source's naming of things? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_Egyptian_hieroglyphs Temerarius (talk) 02:23, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! :) I'm very new to wikipedia but I edit it through the template itself: Template:List of hieroglyphs
Have to admit when I opened that page and saw 'our coverage has been been completely wrecked by an over-enthusiastic editor with limited knowledge on the matter' I got quite the fright... but seems like that was a long time ago lol. It seems my in-progress overhaul is welcome, so far at least. It is, in its current state, mostly focused on ideogrammatic values, and I plan to add determinative values at a later date.
I trust Fischer's source, as it's from the Metropolitan Museum, and I have used it as a resource frequently myself. Some glyph identifications may have been updated a tiny bit since then but I think it is generally safe to add them in. GhostFluff454 (talk) 01:16, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dendara light

[edit]

Have you got a source for your translation? Doug Weller talk 12:48, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The translations were made using the originals that were there as a base, while substituting vocabulary and phrasing from Richter, Barbara Ann "The Theology of Hathor of Dendera: Aural and Visual Scribal Techniques in the Per-Wer Sanctuary" (2012); as well as drawing from Kurth, Dieter, A Ptolemaic Sign-list: Hieroglyphs Used in the Temples of the Graeco-roman Period of Egypt (2010), and the Thoth sign-list entry for glyph TSL_1_6283 (https://thotsignlist.org/mysign?id=6283) and Wilson, Penelope, A Ptolemaic Lexikon (1997).
The main issues with the original translation were misleading and outdated transliteration standards, which were changed according to modern standards as defined by James P. Allen, Middle Egyptian (2000). GhostFluff454 (talk) 01:28, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
