Orientation of the Cats

Hi, I saw that your article was nominated for deletion and then redirected to the main article on Julio Cortázar. The editor's rationale was that the article didn't establish how this short story was independently notable of its author. Offhand this does seem to be a valid concern, as none of the sources in the article look to be usable to establish notability and some of them would not be seen as reliable sources overall. Here are my notes:

• None of the sources are unusable as reliable sources as they're all either sources that anyone can edit or they're self-published sources created by random people, as in the case of the blog or the Prezi link. With Goodreads and Wikipedia, anyone can edit those so they will never undergo the type of editorial oversight necessary to become reliable. Since they're not usable, this poses an issue of original research with the claims. On top of this, none of the sources can establish notability for the short story.

• There doesn't need to be a section about the author, as there's already an article for him that has all of this information. If his biographical information is in the article it should only be his information as it pertains to the book, meaning in this case if the short story is about his cat, it should contain information about when and how he got the cat and how it inspired the work. (If reliable sources cover this information.)

• To a smaller degree this does cover the book itself. There's no article for the book and there is merit in having a section about it, however at the same time this should only cover very general details such as when it was released and by whom. A list of the poems in the book isn't necessary.

To be honest, it's really difficult to establish notability for a single short story since most will either not gain any attention in reliable sources or they will only get attention as part of a larger collection in which they were released. Even very major authors can still put out work that doesn't get a lot of independent attention. In cases like this it can often be better to create an article on the larger collection than a single story.

Now that said, there does is usable coverage out there. I did find this academic source and this one that looks to mention the short story in-depth, which puts us off to a good start. It looks like it might be mentioned in this book, but I can't get a good look at the pages to tell if it's a brief, trivial mention or something more in-depth.

If you are fluent in Spanish, this also seems promising, as does this. The key here is that the coverage doesn't have to be in English - the source just has to be in-depth, reliable, and secondary.

I hope this helps - with the coverage I've found thus far it does look like there's enough out there to establish indepednent notability, now it's a matter of reading through them to see what can be added to the page. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:55, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
