Anonymity

[edit]

It's generally considered to be a bad idea to reveal one's real name on WP. You might want to advise all the students about protecting their personal privacy.) Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Article

[edit]

Professor,

My name is Chris Troutman. I'm a Junior and a History major at Loyola Marymount University. I've also recently became a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador. I'm sorry I wasn't able to support your class this past semester, but I am more than happy to work with you in the following year. I can come out to Azusa, give a short presentation to your students, answer any questions that come up, and most importantly oversee your students' progress online as they interact with the Wikipedia community. Feel free to contact me on my talk page at any time. Please let me know what support you need to keep Wikipedia in your classroom. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:21, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, Great to hear from you and glad to hear that you might be able to help out with some explanations and Wiki support in the Fall. That would be a great help to me and would improve my students' experience.
I am curious as to why you use your actual name...You can see a note left by Dodger67 above under the subject Anonymity. Thoughts?
WP:REALNAME exists to help prevent harassment in real life. Certainly, young students can be naïve and Wikipedia does not want them to provide too much personal information to make them targetable. It is a ban-able offense to "out" a Wikipedian by posting their personal information. As for me, since I am representing Wikipedia in a professional setting in real life I choose to use my real name. I'm not going to walk into your classroom and introduce myself as IvyDinosaur55. I haven't put much other personal data out there so it's unlikely anyone could find me even if they have my real name and know where I go to school. Still, anonymity is a better option for most people.
I look forward to working with you in the future. Please let me know when you'd like me to come out so I can help coordinate your plan before the semester starts. Chris Troutman (talk) 06:07, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You offer a clear explanation for the choice of using your real name - I believe my students will appreciate your straightforward and clear communication. I look forward to inviting you to my class! It will be on Monday evenings 4:20-7:20 beginning September 9. I would deeply appreciate having you there for some portion of the first class, and maybe two (or three) additional weeks throughout the semester. Sincere thanks for your contribution to knowledge!
