The FN 509 is a striker-fired double-action only semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by FN America, the American subsidiary of FN Herstal.[2][1][3]

History

[edit]

The 509 was revealed to the public on April 17, 2017.[1][3] It was not the pistol that FN entered into the Modular Handgun System competition, but was developed from it.[3]

On April 25, 2017, FN America announced that Brink's had selected the 509 for issue to its security guards.[4]

Design and features

[edit]

The 509 was developed from FN's submission to the United States Armed Forces' XM17 Modular Handgun System competition, itself developed from the FNS Compact.[2][3] The pistol is fed by a detachable box magazine, with a 17-round capacity as standard; magazines limited to 10 rounds are available in jurisdictions with high-capacity magazine bans.[2]

The 509 has front and rear cocking serrations.[2] It also features fixed 3-dot luminescent iron sights as standard, with 3-dot night sights available to law enforcement agencies and militaries.[2]

The 509 features a cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel, with a recessed target crown and a polished chamber and feed ramp.[2]

The frame features interchangeable backstraps, which allows users to change the size of the pistol grip to better suit their hand.[2] It also features a Picatinny rail on the underside of the frame, for mounting accessories such as weapon-mounted lights and laser sights.[2]

The magazine release button and slide release lever are both fully ambidextrous.[2] The 509 lacks any manual safeties.[2]
